Pregnancy and gum disease

Gum Disease

In decades past, an old wives’ tale decreed that women lost a tooth for every baby. Today, we know that a healthy pregnancy and healthy teeth and gums are not only possible, but likely - especially with help from Dr. Michael Unti, the gum disease dentist that Palatine trusts.

At Palatine Complete Dental in Palatine we know that pregnancy is a time of change for a woman, and her mouth is no exception. Unfortunately, many of these changes make an expectant mother more susceptible to dental disease. Hormonal changes affect more than your moods; they also may leave the gums more vulnerable to disease.

Pregnant women also tend to eat smaller, more frequent meals, exposing their teeth and gums to sugars and acids more often. And if heartburn hits in the middle of the night, few women want to drag themselves out of bed to brush their teeth after chewing on an antacid.

Pregnant women in the Palatine area are encouraged to schedule a dental evaluation with Dr. Unti and his friendly staff. The team at Palatine Complete Dental is experienced in caring for teeth and gums during this special time and will be happy to advise you about the special oral hygiene needs of expectant mothers. Taking care of your teeth is just another way you can also take care of your growing baby.

Please call (877) 360-6985 today to schedule a complete dental examination with Dr. Unti.

Don't Forget to Floss!

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria can hid between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gum line.

Visit Our Office Regularly!

Take good care of your smile. Remember to visit the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Mouthwash Is Important, Too!

Brushing and flossing may not be enough. The ADA now recommends using an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce plaque and prevent gingivitis.
